Small daily choices make a big difference in asthma control. Dr. Dipak Viradia, Chest Physician & Intensivist, shares simple do’s and don’ts to help asthma patients breathe easier and prevent attacks.

Do’s

Stay away from your triggers. Avoid dust, smoke, pollen, mould, pet hair, strong smells and anything else that sets off your asthma or breathing problems.

Maintain a healthy sleep routine. Regular, good-quality sleep supports immunity and overall health. Waking up at night with cough or breathlessness is a sign that your asthma needs review.

Stay in a pollution-free environment as much as possible. Keep your home well ventilated, avoid smoky or dusty areas, and wear a mask on high-pollution days.

Take medicines at proper intervals. Use your inhalers and medicines exactly as prescribed, on time, even when you feel well.

Don’ts

Don’t disrupt your regular, healthy routine. Irregular meals, poor sleep and stress can make asthma harder to control.

Don’t smoke or drink alcohol. Smoking damages the airways and makes asthma medicines less effective, and alcohol can trigger symptoms in some people. Avoid second-hand smoke too.

Don’t overwater indoor plants if you are allergic to mould. Wet soil encourages mould growth, which can trigger asthma.

Don’t take more medicine than prescribed. Overusing medicines, especially without medical advice, can cause side effects. If you need your reliever inhaler more often, consult your doctor.

Don’t hang sheets or clothes outside to dry if you are allergic to pollen. Pollen sticks to fabric and is brought into your home and bed.

Yes, in people allergic to mould. Overwatered soil encourages mould growth, so water plants moderately and keep them out of the bedroom.
