Healthy lungs are the foundation of an active life. Dr. Dipak Viradia, Chest Physician & Intensivist, shares simple everyday habits that help keep your lungs strong.

Stay active. Regular walking, cycling, swimming or yoga strengthens the breathing muscles and improves how efficiently your lungs and heart work.

Clean your home’s air. Keep rooms well ventilated, avoid smoking indoors, reduce smoke from incense, mosquito coils and chulhas, and fix damp areas to prevent mould.

Drink green tea. Green tea contains natural antioxidants and can be part of a healthy lifestyle. Enjoy it in moderation, as a healthy habit, not a medicine.

Maintain a healthy weight. Extra weight around the chest and abdomen makes breathing harder and can worsen asthma and sleep apnoea.

Reduce toxins going in. Your body naturally clears toxins, and the best way to help it is to stop adding them. Quit smoking and tobacco, avoid second-hand smoke, and wear a mask around dust, fumes and pollution. Detox drinks and cleanses are not needed for lung health.

Drink plenty of water. Good hydration keeps the mucus in your airways thin, making it easier for the lungs to clear it.

Practise deep breathing exercises. Slow, deep breathing and techniques like pursed-lip breathing help the lungs work more efficiently and are especially useful for people with asthma or COPD.

Eat more food-based antioxidants. Fresh fruits and vegetables such as oranges, amla, berries, tomatoes, carrots, spinach and other green leafy vegetables support overall lung and body health.
