You aren’t just an employee. You are a son, a daughter, a partner, and a parent’s pride. Every day you go to work for your family, and staying healthy at work is one of the greatest gifts you can give them. Many workplaces expose people to dust, fumes and chemicals that can silently damage the lungs over years. In this video, Dr. Dipak Viradia, Chest Physician & Intensivist, explains which work-related lung diseases to watch for and how to protect yourself.

Work-Related Lung Diseases

Breathing in harmful particles at work, day after day, can lead to long-term lung damage:

  • Occupational asthma and allergy: caused by dust, fibres, dyes and chemicals, with symptoms that worsen on working days and improve on holidays
  • Silicosis: caused by breathing in fine silica dust from stone cutting, quarrying, sandblasting, construction and glass work. It causes permanent scarring of the lungs and increases the risk of tuberculosis.
  • Byssinosis (“brown lung”): linked to cotton, flax and hemp dust in textile mills, causing chest tightness that is often worse at the start of the work week
  • Hard metal lung disease: linked to fine metal dust, such as cobalt, from cutting and polishing tools, including some diamond polishing work
  • Chronic bronchitis and COPD: long-term exposure to dust, smoke and fumes, especially combined with smoking
  • Chemical lung injury: sudden exposure to strong gases or fumes, such as chlorine or ammonia, can cause serious breathing problems

Warning Signs

  • Cough or phlegm that doesn’t go away
  • Breathlessness while walking or climbing stairs
  • Wheezing or chest tightness, especially on working days
  • Symptoms that improve on holidays and return at work
  • Tiredness, weight loss, or frequent chest infections

Work-related lung diseases often develop slowly over years. By the time symptoms appear, some damage may be permanent, which is why prevention and early detection matter.

How to Protect Yourself

  1. Wear the right mask. Use an N95 mask or a respirator suitable for the dust or fumes you work with. Cloth masks and handkerchiefs do not filter fine dust.
  2. Use safety measures at work: ventilation, exhaust systems, wet cutting methods and enclosed machinery reduce dust in the air.
  3. Don’t smoke. Smoking multiplies the damage caused by workplace dust.
  4. Change clothes and wash before going home, so dust isn’t carried to your family.
  5. Get regular lung check-ups, including a lung function test (PFT) and a chest X-ray when advised, even if you feel well.
  6. Report symptoms early to your doctor and tell them about your work.

Employers can help by providing protective equipment, good ventilation, training and periodic health check-ups for workers.
