“Svasthasya svasthya rakshanam, aturasya vikara prashamanam.”

This ancient verse from the Charaka Samhita sums up the purpose of medicine in two simple ideas: protect the health of the healthy, and relieve the illness of the sick. Written centuries ago, it remains just as true in modern medicine today.

Protecting the health of the healthy. Good medicine does not begin when a person falls ill. It begins much earlier, with prevention. For lung health, this means avoiding smoking and second-hand smoke, keeping indoor air clean, protecting yourself from dust and pollution, staying active, getting flu and pneumonia vaccines when advised, and having regular check-ups. Simple tests like spirometry can find lung problems before symptoms appear, especially in smokers and people exposed to dust or fumes at work.

Relieving the illness of the sick. When illness does come, the aim is accurate diagnosis and effective treatment, without delay. Whether it is asthma, allergy, COPD, a lung infection, lung cancer or a critical illness needing ICU care, early and correct treatment relieves suffering, prevents complications and helps patients return to normal life.

At Rudrax Chest Clinic, Dr. Dipak Viradia follows both halves of this principle: helping people keep their lungs healthy, and providing advanced, timely care when breathing problems arise.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a verse from the Charaka Samhita meaning that the purpose of medicine is to protect the health of healthy people and to relieve the disease of those who are ill.

Many lung diseases, such as COPD and lung cancer, develop slowly over years due to smoking, smoke and pollution. Preventing exposure and detecting problems early helps avoid serious illness later.

Smokers, former smokers and people exposed to dust, smoke or chemical fumes should consider a lung function test even if they feel well, as early lung damage often has no symptoms.
