When someone is diagnosed with cancer, families often look for gentler options, and many hear claims that homeopathy or other alternative remedies can cure cancer without surgery, chemotherapy or radiation. In this video, Dr. Dipak Viradia, Chest Physician & Intensivist, answers this question honestly.

What does the evidence say? There is no reliable scientific evidence that homeopathy can cure cancer, shrink tumours or stop cancer from spreading. Cancer is a disease in which abnormal cells grow uncontrollably, and controlling it requires treatments proven in clinical studies, such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy.

The real danger is delay. The biggest harm does not come from the remedy itself, but from the time lost. Many patients first try alternative treatments for months, and by the time they come for proper treatment, a cancer that could have been controlled or cured has spread. In lung cancer especially, early diagnosis and timely treatment make a major difference to survival.

Can complementary therapies be used alongside treatment? Some patients use complementary approaches such as yoga, meditation, counselling and good nutrition to cope with stress and side effects and to feel better during treatment. These can support wellbeing, but they are not a substitute for cancer treatment. Always tell your cancer specialist about any other medicine or remedy you are taking, as some products can interact with treatment.

Be careful of “guaranteed cure” claims. Any treatment that promises to cure cancer without tests, scans or proper follow-up, or asks you to stop your prescribed treatment, should be a warning sign.

What patients should do: If you notice warning signs such as a cough lasting more than three weeks, coughing up blood, breathlessness, chest pain or unexplained weight loss, get checked early. If cancer is diagnosed, discuss all treatment options with your specialist and start treatment without delay.
