Watch VideoAn asthma attack happens when the airways suddenly become tight, swollen and filled with mucus, making it hard to breathe. The good news is that most asthma attacks can be prevented with the right daily care. Dr. Dipak Viradia, Chest Physician & Intensivist, shares simple steps to keep asthma under control.
Take your controller inhaler every day, even when you feel well. It reduces airway inflammation and is the most important way to prevent attacks. Always carry your reliever inhaler for quick relief if symptoms start. Know and avoid your triggers, such as dust, smoke, pollen, mould, pet hair, cold air, strong smells and pollution. Get the flu vaccine every year, since chest infections are a common cause of attacks. Learn the correct inhaler technique and ask your doctor to check it at every visit.
Watch for early warning signs that your asthma is getting worse: waking up at night with cough or breathlessness, needing your reliever inhaler more often than usual, or feeling breathless during normal activities. Consult your doctor early, before it turns into a severe attack.
Seek emergency care immediately if you are too breathless to speak, your lips or nails turn bluish, or your reliever inhaler gives no relief.
