Red, itchy eyes are one of the most common signs of allergy, but they are only one piece of the picture. Allergy can show up in the nose, eyes, throat, chest and skin, and even through signs most people never connect with allergy, like dark circles, snoring or constant tiredness. In this video, Dr. Dipak Viradia, Chest Physician & Intensivist, explains the signs to watch for.

Eyes

  • Red, itchy, watery eyes, usually in both eyes
  • Puffy or swollen eyelids
  • Dark circles under the eyes (called allergic shiners), caused by congestion in the nose and sinuses, not just lack of sleep

Nose

  • Sneezing in bouts, especially in the morning
  • Runny or blocked nose, clear watery discharge
  • Itching inside the nose
  • Reduced sense of smell
  • In children, frequently rubbing the nose upwards with the palm (the allergic salute), sometimes leaving a faint line across the nose

Throat, Mouth and Ears

  • Itchy throat or roof of the mouth
  • Frequent throat clearing, from mucus dripping down the back of the throat
  • A feeling of blocked or full ears
  • Breathing through the mouth, especially at night

Chest

  • Dry cough, often at night or early morning
  • Wheezing or a whistling sound while breathing
  • Chest tightness or breathlessness, which can be signs that allergy has led to allergic asthma

Skin

  • Itchy rashes or raised hives
  • Dry, itchy patches (eczema), especially in children
  • Rash where the skin touched something like metal, cosmetics or chemicals

Signs People Often Miss

  • Snoring or disturbed sleep due to a blocked nose
  • Daytime tiredness, poor concentration and irritability, from poor sleep and ongoing inflammation
  • Frequent “colds” that never seem to fully go away
  • In children, poor school performance or reduced interest in play due to disturbed sleep

When Red Eyes Are NOT Allergy

See an eye specialist promptly if red eyes come with pain, blurred vision, light sensitivity, thick yellow or green discharge, affect only one eye, or follow an injury. These can be signs of an infection or other eye conditions that need urgent treatment.

What to Do

If you notice several of these signs, especially if they keep coming back or follow a pattern (morning, season, place), consult a doctor. Proper allergy testing can confirm the cause, and the right treatment can relieve symptoms across the eyes, nose, chest and skin.
