Watch VideoGood health is not built in a day. It comes from small, consistent habits that protect the body, including the lungs and heart, over the years. In this post, Dr. Dipak Viradia, Chest Physician & Intensivist, shares simple everyday tips that can help you and your family live a healthier, more active life.
1. Exercise regularly. Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most days, whether brisk walking, cycling, yoga or swimming. Regular exercise strengthens the heart and breathing muscles, improves lung capacity, controls weight and lifts mood. Even people with asthma or COPD benefit from regular, doctor-approved activity.
2. Avoid saturated fats. Limit fried foods, excess ghee and butter, fast food and processed snacks. Diets high in saturated fat raise cholesterol and the risk of heart disease. Choose healthier options like moderate amounts of vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, pulses and whole grains.
3. Eat freshly cooked food. Fresh, home-cooked meals with plenty of vegetables, fruits, dal and whole grains provide the nutrients your body needs to stay strong and fight infections. Reduce packaged, preserved and reheated foods, which are often high in salt, sugar and unhealthy fats.
4. Listen to your body. Don’t ignore warning signs. A cough that won’t go away, breathlessness, chest pain, unusual tiredness, sudden weight change or disturbed sleep are your body’s way of asking for attention. Early check-ups help catch problems before they become serious.
5. Monitor your weight regularly. Keeping a healthy weight reduces the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and sleep apnoea. Excess weight around the chest and abdomen can also make breathing harder and worsen asthma symptoms.
6. Get 7–8 hours of complete sleep. Good-quality sleep allows the body to repair itself, supports immunity and improves concentration. Loud snoring, choking or gasping during sleep, or feeling tired despite a full night’s rest may be signs of sleep apnoea, which needs medical evaluation through a sleep study.
Small changes made consistently can make a big difference to how you feel today and how healthy you remain in the years ahead.
